Blants (noun) the rants of a blogger

  1. Check slow WordPress sites with Splunk and fix them

December 26, 2014 by The Man

I’d thought this site was a bit sluggish, it’s a WordPress site with quite a few plugins as I often like to play with new WordPress stuff. I’m now running a Splunk server at home, again, mainly for testing and development for a new project for one of my clients. One of Splunks Apps is a web site monitor and I decided to give it a go.

As you can see from the image above my blog was hitting the red slow response time all the time. It was time to remove some old pluggins, anything that was not being used. The after was a lot better and pages come it smother now. Some pluggins can be like toolbars, often not needed and they just slow things down.

  2. Updating WordPress from the command line

    Just a reminder for me…

    wp core update /var/www/wordpress-4.0.zip

  3. WordPress dislikes

November 16, 2013 by The Man

I am not a great fan of sites that say you cannot delete your account details – WordPress suggest leaving it dormant but that really isn’t a great solution. What happens if your account is hijacked ? At least if you can delete your account then you know you are safe.

If you’re wondering why I wanted to delete my WordPress account ? Well it seems I have two accounts – not sure how I managed to pick up the second one but I no longer want or need it but it will now forever live on in the interwebs…..

  4. Stop WordPress asking for FTP details when installing plugins

August 23, 2013 by The Man

Very simple just ssh in and run the following

    sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www

or if you are on OS X (tested on Yosemite)

    sudo chown -R _www:_www /var/www

  5. Wow 1000+ users subscribing in a day…. mmm no our friends spambots.

August 9, 2013 by The Man

Well it looks like spambots have been busy on my site with over 1000 users registered in the last day. Not sure what they are trying to achieve but thankfully they will be automatically removed by using http://wordpress.org/plugins/user-spam-remover/

  6. Browser wars – or what web browser people use when on this site

April 5, 2012 by The Man

    Key points:

Firefox is above average, no surprise.
    IE is down a bit.
    Chrome continues to rise.
    Opera falling.

    The lesson:

Who cares what browser you use as long as it works for you 🙂
