  1. Facebook and scams – why do Facebook make it so hard to report ?

February 28, 2013 by The Man

I was on Facebook the other day and saw an advert for cheap Oakley glasses, now I know how much they are so seeing them offered at 80% off is just to good to be true. So time to check out the advert for http://www.oakley-ukstore.com

First the site looks ok but there are already tell tale signs, like no way to contact them and no address anywhere. Next lets check the WHOIS record.

Not a great sign when the domain was only registered the day before. The address in Florida does not exist and yet the email I sent to their ISP has yet to solicit a reply. To be fair reporting it to Oakley them self did not solicit a reply either.

Now despite reporting to Facebook it looks like the advert is back the next day but with some clever use of obfuscation.

Sadly the advert was rotated before I could report it and there is nowhere you can report these things outside of the advert. So lots more Facebook users will be ripped off because a multi billion dollar company isn’t interested in your safety. Surprised – not really.

    Update

Well looks like the ads are still being shown on Facebook some 3 days later, just a change of url in the image.

I also had a reply from abuse@take2hosting.com, this is what I sent

http://www.oakley-ukstore.com which is registered with you is a scam site. The registered address appears to be fake and the site is a classic card scam site”

    and this the comical reply.

“We’ve passed your notification on to our client and they have reported back that the below-referenced issue has been addressed.”

WTF so have they stopped scamming or just fixed the fake address ? Is it really any wonder so many people get ripped off when we have incompetence like this.

Looks like the company is based out of China and has been doing this for at least 4 years http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090812130140AAAi4ny so anybody looking for HOOYOO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD should know they are scammers with no goods but lots of fakes.

Indeed I wonder if they are the same HooYoo (US) Inc. who were recently terminated by IETF.org

It does look like somebody caught up with them as one of their other domains repdream.com has been seized “This domain was previously held for the sale of alleged counterfeit TRUE RELIGION products”

    Update 2

I asked take2hosting “Can you confirm they have stopped scamming credit card details or fixed the false registered address ?”

    Their reply

“We closed out this issue once our customer reported back that they have disabled service to the web site involved (www.oakley-ukstore.com).”

It seems that they have just moved on, well done to take2hosting for ridding themselves and sorry to them for pestering them when they already closed the account.

Now off to http://volumedrive.com their new hosts, also contacted Internic to report their registrar (which I suspect is one in the same company)

    Update 3

Well volumedrive.com were quick to block the site, but literally 40 minutes later the site was back up again on 199.115.229.25 on volumedrive.com. Let’s email them again to let them know.

And wow what lazy people they are, here is the original template file http://www.templatemonster.com/demo/29447.html – top Oakley ripoff and below the template file

    Screen Shot 2013-03-04 at 14.56.21

    Update 4

Well the site has been down for 5 hours now at 21:00 on 4th March 2013

    Update 5

From the 5th of March 2013 the site has been on 204.77.14.217 which is owned by fiberhub.com but their whois abuse record is incorrect and 24 hours later no reply from their web site, but I will perceiver and am sending twitter and email messages in the hope of soliciting a reply soon.

    Update 6 – 6th Match 2013

So looks like @Oakley doesn’t care about you getting scammed and fiberhub.com are not going to reply. It shouldn’t be this difficult but that’s what makes scamming so easy – nobody gives a shit 🙁

    Update 7 – 12th Aug 2013

The original tweet – if professional athletes are taken in what hope for the rest of us.

Well after seeing Hannah Cockcroft (a great athlete btw) mention one of the scam sites on Twitter I replied to her and Oakley and finally got a reply from Oakley. Lets see what happens.

August 28, 2010 by The Man

Not sure if it is live or what the hell I was doing but in my quest to spread WoL everywhere I “think” there is an app now.
